COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The Columbus Museum is commemorating Juneteenth with artifacts and artwork from both local and nationally known artists.

Museum leaders say it’s a chance to learn about Juneteenth and see how these collections tell stories of resistance and determination tied to the Southern freedom movement.

Director of Education and Engagement Lucy Kacir says the tour is about making that history accessible.

“We think it’s really meaningful to collect these pieces to preserve and care for them and share them with the public and the Columbus museum because there was a time in our nation’s history where that wasn’t occurring. Everyone stories and artwork was not being preserved and not treated with respect they deserve,” Kacir said.

The tour starts at 11 a.m. Friday.

Museum staff say the exhibit will remain on display for the foreseeable future.
