Columbus judicial building nears completion as government overhaul continues New $200 million facility on track for move-in by fall, with old Government Center slated for demolition

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A new judicial building is nearing completion on 10th Street, marking a major step in the city’s government overhaul and signaling the end of a longtime landmark plagued by flooding and asbestos.

The new Columbus Judicial Building is taking shape next to the old Government Center that has served the city for more than 50 years.

The new building will house judges, courtrooms, the public defender’s office and the district attorney all under one roof.

Outgoing Mayor Skip Henderson said the project came in at just over $200 million, on budget, even after construction costs surged post-COVID.

Designers incorporated two existing wings from the old Government Center site into the new structure, saving the city millions.

“They should have it ready to move the judges in by August, September, August, September timeframe and start moving the courtrooms in and hopefully complete the move by the first of 2027,” Henderson said.

Once the move is complete, crews will begin landscaping and hardscaping around the new building.

The old Government Center is expected to come down after that.

A new mayor will be elected June 16 in a runoff election and will inherit the project as it crosses the finish line.
