Valley Rescue Mission delivers Christmas meals to community

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Valley Rescue Mission and volunteers delivered nearly 100 Christmas meals to people throughout the community on Christmas Day.

Starting at 9 a.m. Thursday morning, a total of 85 meals were picked up from the Valley Rescue Mission Women’s Recovery Center on 11th Avenue in Columbus and brought directly to the homes of those in need.

Recipients for Meals on Wheels were able to sign up in advance for the special delivery of ham, turkey, potatoes, greens and other items. It took one hour to distribute everything.

“The joy when you talk to people when you’re bringing the food, they give you conversation and a lot of time they even try to give you something to take back with you...whether it’s a book or a note or something,” said Jarvis Hamilton, who was volunteering for his 23rd year.

Doug McLeod, volunteering for his 35th year, said the service fills an important need.

“Those people can walk or drive...these people that we’re working and delivering the meals for today – they cannot do that. Therefore, that’s why it’s so important to me,” McLeod said.

Over 20 people volunteered Christmas morning to deliver meals.
