Veterans react to first veterans resource fair in Columbus

We Care Veteran Resource Fair in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - All day Friday, a large group of veterans from all branches of the military lined up for the first-ever “We Care Vet Fair” in Columbus.

Hosted by United Military Care, the event brought more than 100 providers under one roof near Fort Benning, offering a wide range of resources for those who have served the country.

Some of the services included résumé building and housing assistance. Valley Healthcare was also on hand, providing free dental and vision exams to improve the quality of life for veterans.

“It’s a beautiful thing to actually see so many people gather so many agencies and services all for veterans,” said veteran John Bradford.

“It means there are great opportunities for myself and other people who need these opportunities,” said veteran Philip Rosner.

United Military Care is a Georgia-based organization that connects veterans to resources such as job opportunities, mental health services and dental care. The organization has held veteran resource fairs across the state since 2022, but Sept. 12 marked its first time in Columbus.

“We have over 100 organizations that are local, state and federal to address the needs of our veterans and what their concerns are,” said Kim Scoffi, president of United Military Care.

“I have been dealing with the VA for over 20 years, and I’ve never seen an expo like this before,” said veteran Marlene Garrett.

“Everything I think is great. I think every veteran should have a chance to come to this maybe even twice a year. There are a lot of changes in policies, in the military, health benefits, so this is a great way to catch up,” said Bradford.

Scoffi said the group has helped more than 10,000 veterans since starting in 2022. She said events like these are important because it can be difficult for veterans to know where to turn.

“I think there is so much here it really takes a while to soak it all in. It’s just amazing there are so many people who have the opportunity to get something that they don’t realize is there,” said Rosner.

“They have places here for people who may suffer from PTSD. Every one of us knows someone who is no longer here,” said Bradford.

“I hope they continue to have expos like this for years to come. Veterans need help relating back into the community,” said Garrett.
