MCSD Students and faculty return for first day of school

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Summer break is officially over for students in the Muscogee County School District as they returned to the classroom Monday morning. Some students wished for a little more time off, while others were eager to dive into a new school year.

MCSD Superintendent Dr. David Lewis says the district is implementing new programs aimed at improving student learning and engagement.

“We are working towards proficiency,” Dr. Lewis said. “We are implementing our new English language arts standards, also finishing up our reading cohort of the Rollins training. We are providing for all of our schools to work on the structured science of reading.”

In addition to academic changes, the district is rolling out a new cell phone policy and adding weapon detection systems at middle and high schools to enhance safety.

Kimberly Wright, director of communications for MCSD, says the energy at the schools was electric.

“I love the excitement,” Wright said. “We went to MLK Elementary first and then we came to Brewer Elementary. It’s just exciting to see the kids and their shining faces.”

Parents shared mixed emotions as they dropped their children off, balancing the joy of a fresh start with the bittersweet feeling of summer’s end.

“It’s kind of bittersweet because I love my kids being at home,” said Terrilynn McCullough, a parent at Dimon Elementary. “So you know it was pretty hard, but it’s what’s best for them.”

Dr. Lewis says the district’s staffing is the strongest it’s been since the pandemic, and he’s optimistic about the months ahead.
