WEST POINT, Ga. (WTVM) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, is preparing to celebrate a major milestone: the 50th anniversary of the dedication of West Point Dam and Powerhouse.

Originally completed and dedicated in 1975, the West Point Project has served the region for five decades through flood risk management, hydropower production, recreation, and water quality improvements.

A public celebration will take place Friday, June 13, at Hardley Creek Recreation Area. Admission is free, and organizers say special invitations will be extended to individuals involved in the dam’s construction and operation, including former U.S. Army Corps employees and contractors.

The Corps is currently seeking historical photos or memorabilia from the dam’s construction period to display during the event. All borrowed items will be returned. Anyone with materials to share is encouraged to contact Park Ranger Susan Cromer at (706) 645-2937.

To mark the occasion, the Corps will waive entrance fees at all West Point Lake day-use parks from June 13 to June 15.

“We want as many people as possible to help commemorate the golden anniversary of West Point Project, we’re waiving day-use park fees on those days, so everyone has the chance to enjoy the lake and be part of this milestone.”
