Columbus Clingstones reveal new mascot name The Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves announced the name of their team’s mascot after receiving input from fans.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves announced the name of their team’s mascot after receiving input from fans.

The new name will be “Fuzzy.” The Columbus Clingstones announced the name on their website, and they said, “The cheerful mascot embodies the team’s pride with a fitting new name for its playful personality.”

The team called on fans to name the mascot on Oct. 29. Fans submitted more than 600 ideas until Nov. 6, and the final four names were announced last week.

The final names included Fuzzy, Pit, Stoney, and Cobbler. Fans selected the new team name by submitting a vote for one of the four.

“It was great to see so much enthusiasm from the community for the mascot name and we’re looking forward to this energy carrying into our upcoming season,” said General Manager Pete Laven. “Announcing Fuzzy’s official name is just the beginning of the fun, family-friendly baseball experience the Clingstones will bring to Columbus.”

News Leader 9 broke the news of the Clingstone mascot’s name to Columbus mayor Skip Henderson. He was at Synovus Park thanking crews for their hard work as they get the stadium ready for the baseball team’s first game.

“First of all, you’re the first person to tell me the name was Fuzzy, I had not heard that,” the mayor said.

He says although double a baseball has been in the city before, things have changed.

“Columbus has changed a lot since the 80s and 90s when we had baseball before, there is so much more density, so much more residential activity, so I expect it to take off incredibly well,” said Henderson.

Clingstones General Manager Pete Levan told us that the name “Fuzzy” was a home run for baseball fans, and tickets are already selling.

“The response has been great on our club seats, as well as our lower bowl seats, so people are coming in putting down deposits, some people are doing it as a Christmas gifts for their loved one,” Levan said.

The $50,000,000 price tag is one the mayor says will be recouped with not just ticket sales, but the development of the south side of the parking lot with new retail shops, and a parking deck in the area.

“We’re going to be putting a lot of people to work, over here in the southeast as we begin this construction work, and as you pointed out those dollars are going to stay here and keep turning over,” Henderson said.

It’s money, the mayor says, will keep Columbus at the forefront of economic growth for current and future families.

“I think it’s great, baseball is about family, bringing the kids out here and letting them aspire to be like the heroes on the field,” he added.

The Columbus Clingstones will play their first game Synovus Park on April 1. Officials say fans should stay tuned for a job fair for seasonal game day positions.
