AMERICUS, Ga. (WTVM) - An Americus couple who survived cancer will play a main role in the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center’s tree lighting ceremony.

Scott and Sherry Ivey will light the “Lights of Love” tree to honor local cancer patients and their families. Thousands of lights will be lit in honor and in memory of loved ones.

People can click here to purchase a light for the tree. Donations for the event will help oncology patients currently receiving treatments at the center.

The tree lighting ceremony will be held at the main hospital entrance on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m.

Phoebe Sumter officials said that Scott and Sherry first met as students at Georgia Southwestern more than 40 years ago, have raised three children, and are members of Americus First Baptist Church. Both were also diagnosed with cancer.

According to representatives, Shery learned she had breast cancer the day before Christmas Eve in 2013, and five and half years later, Scott was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The couple is now both cancer-free, and they will have the opportunity to share their experience, encourage others battling cancer while spreading awareness about getting cancer screenings, thank their family and friends, and thank their care teams during the lighting ceremony.
