COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - “Inclusion and belonging” was the focus during the Legacy Celebration Awards Banquet at Columbus State University Wednesday afternoon.
The day started with a professional development workshop followed by the grand dinner at the Cunningham Conference Center on the university’s Main Campus. The banquet recognized the work of students, employees, alumni and community partners for their dedication to incorporate inclusion and belonging at the university and the Columbus community.
Columbus city councilor Mimi Woodson, the city’s first Hispanic member of the city council, was a speaker at the event. She also became the first person of Hispanic descent elected to any public office in Georgia, as well as the state’s longest-serving Hispanic elected official.
“It’s such a great honor,” Woodson said. “I was surprised when I was asked to speak. It’s an honor being a woman, being Latina, to serve this community for over 28 years; and to be able to give a positive message on inclusion is amazing.”
