Lonnie Jackson Academy hosts Black History Month program

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Lonnie Jackson Academy hosted their annual Black History Month program, with guest speaker Lonya Jackson-Sarden.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, Lonya Jackson-Sarden, the daughter of Columbus activist, Lonnie Jackson spoke to students at the Academy and says she’s happy to walk in her fathers footstep in making a change in children lives.

“You know I feel like I’m stepping in his footsteps because he’s used to always get up to the front and talked to kids about being the best they can be, children are our future and I think we need to take time to talk to children.” said Jackson-Sarden

Students also dressed as influential black activists participating in a wax museum held in the Lonnie Jackson Academy Gymnasium. Each “student wax figure’ wore a button for fellow students to push to hear facts about the person they chose to represent.

The vision came from wanting to highlight famous influential African American activists from Columbus.

According to staff member, Nicole Burkes, the wax museum has been a Lonnie Jackson tradition for 5 years now and hopes to continue the tradition.
