Federal Judge Blocks Immigration Asylum Rule
A FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKS TRUMP-ERA ASYLUM RULE THAT TRIED TO DRAMATICALLY LIMIT CENTRAL AMERICAN MIGRANTS FROM CLAIMING ASYLUM
(CNN) – A federal judge in California has blocked a Trump-era rule that tried to limit the number of Central Americans seeking asylum in the U.S.
The rule which took effect just a day before the inauguration; prohibited migrants who traveled through third countries from seeking asylum.
It was part of the Trump administration’s effort to tighten immigration along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The judge said the regulation deprived migrants of essential procedural safeguards to avoid arbitrary denials of asylum and increased their risk of being subjected to violence.
It’s unlikely the current Justice Department will defend the Trump-era rule.
The Biden administration has committed to reversing the hardline policies enacted under former president Trump.
