U.S. Deploying Bombers To Counter Russia
US DEPLOYING B-1 BOMBERS TO NORWAY TO COUNTER RUSSIAN THREATS
(CNN) – The U.S. is sending a message to Russia over its militarizing the Arctic region.
Multiple defense officials say four Air Force B-1 bombers and about 200 personnel are being deployed to Orland Air Base in Norway.
Within the next three weeks, missions will begin up to the Arctic circle and in International Air Space off northwestern Russia.
The Defense Department has been concerned about Russia militarizing the region and potentially shutting off maritime access and access to natural resources.
Arctic missions had previously been staged out of the UK.
Officials say the move to Norway sends a message of shorter response time to Russia.
There have been similar operations in the Middle East with B-52 bombers.
They showed how the U.S. could quickly move military assets to potentially tense regions.
