Monarch Butterfly Nearing Extinction

THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY POPULATION IS DROPPING ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH

(CNN) – The Monarch butterfly is getting closer toward extinction.

According to the Xerces society less than 2,000 of those butterflies were found on the coast of California.

That’s nearly a 100% drop since the 1980s.

The findings were based on data collected by volunteers who visited nearly 250-sites from Mendocino, California to to Baja California, Mexico.

Researchers say breeding, overwintering and pesticides are among the primary reasons the Monarch butterfly population is dropping.
