Acting Defense Secretary Visits Bahrain
ACTING DEFENSE SECRETARY CHRIS MILLER MAKES HIS FIRST OVERSEAS TRIP, AN UNANNOUNCED VISIT TO BAHRAIN TO CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING WITH THE TROOPS
(CNN) – Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller made an unannounced trip to Bahrain Wednesday.
It’s his first overseas trip since taking over at the Department of Defense after former Secretary Mark Esper was fired by president Trump.
But defense officials say Miller’s trip to the Middle East is not about policy, it is to celebrate Thanksgiving with troops stationed there.
Bahrain is host to more than 7,000 U.S. personnel, including the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet and Central Command.
The visit comes roughly one week after Miller announced significant troop reductions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
That drawdown of U.S. forces will be taking place just days before president-elect Joe Biden is to take the oath of office.
Miller has said he will cooperate to provide an effective transition process with the new administration.
