Study To Examine Using SpaceX To Ship Cargo

U.S. TRANSPORTATION COMMAND TO STUDY USE OF SPACEX ROCKETS TO MOVE CARGO AROUND THE WORLD

(CNN) – Companies like Amazon want to deliver your packages by drone, but one U.S. agency is aiming a lot higher.

Space!

U.S. Transportation Command wants to use private spaceships to move cargo around the world.

The agency’s commander laid out its plan last week, during the national defense transportation association’s fall meeting.

General Stephen Lyons told the virtual audience about the agency’s partnership with SpaceX and XArc.

They’re exploring the possibility of transporting humanitarian aid and other time-critical items through space.

Lyons asked the audience to imagine being able to ship a military cargo plane’s payload anywhere on earth in under an hour.

Of course, there are many hurdles to cross, such as cost and cargo weight constraints.

Lyons says we could see some proof of principle activities as early as next year.
