COVID: Model Projects 371K Deaths By January 1st
CORONAVIRUS MODEL PREDICTS 7,000 FEWER DEATHS THAN IT PREVIOUSLY PROJECTED BY NEW YEAR'S DAY
(CNN) – A model used to forecast the number of future COVID-19 deaths now predicts fewer people will die from the virus.
The model is from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine.
This week it predicted that more than 371,000 people will die from the coronavirus by January 1st.
While it is still a lot of people; that number is down by about 7,000 deaths from a week ago.
Researchers say if more people started wearing masks, the number would drop even more.
They project a 100,000 lives could be saved by New Year’s Day, if 95% of the U.S population wore a mask.
According to the model, national mask use is closer to 48%, making it doubtful. Researchers say making it doubtful the U.S. will be able to significantly drop the death toll.
