U.S. Ambassador To China To Step Down From Role

THE U.S. WILL SOON NEED TO FIND A NEW AMBASSADOR TO CHINA

(CNN) – The U.S. ambassador to China is stepping down.

A source told CNN Terry Branstad is expected to exit Beijing sometime before election day 2020.

Branstad has served as ambassador for more than three years.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo thanked him for “rebalancing U.S.- China relations.”

Branstad holds a personal relationship with Chinese president Xi that dates back decades.

He’s been involved in a spat between the State Department and China’s state-run media People’s Daily after the outlet refused to publish an op-ed written by Branstad.
