Study: Dinosaurs’ Bone Structure Important For Weight
DINOSAURS' UNIQUE BONE STRUCTURE HELPED THEM SUPPORT THEIR LARGE WEIGHT
(CNN) – Some dinosaurs were such large creatures that the ground would have shaken while they walked.
In order to support that weight, the animals had different bone structures than mammals and birds.
A team of paleontologists came to that conclusion after comparing fossils of dinosaurs to other extinct mammals, like Siberian tigers and mammoths. As well as animals alive today, like sheep and elephants.
They specifically looked at the trabecular bone, which surrounds the tiny holes in the interior part of the bone.
Scientists found that in dinosaurs this bone increases in density to support the animal’s weight.
The study’s authors believe these findings could help with future designs structures used in aerospace, construction or vehicles.
