Scholar Athlete of the Week: Katie Gilreath, Harris County Softball

GILREATH HOLDS A 4.4 GPA AND EARNED GEORGIA CERTIFICATE OF MERIT RECOGNITION

Playing defense in softball is all about staying on your toes and being ready for anything. That’s how Harris County second baseman Katie Gilreath attacks her daily activities.

“One of my coaches told me that you put it in order, God, family, school, softball. Keeping my priorities straight and just putting stuff first. School goes before softball and golf.”

Gilreath excels on the diamond with a fielding percentage at .808, and her 4.4 GPA qualified for the Georgia Certificate of Merit recognizing the top 5 percent of all rising seniors.

“On the way there most of the time I’m doing homework and I have my flashlight out, and then doing homework on the way back. It’s just how it is being a student athlete, but I love it.”

Last fall, Gilreath put school on the back-burner when the Tigers battled for the Class AAAAA State Championship. Harris County finished second overall.

“I was so excited! It’s one of the best feelings in the world when you’re in the state championship. We didn’t even worry about school until we got back the next week because we were super pumped, but it was one of the best feelings ever.”

The senior balances sports with AP and college classes. Her favorite subjects are science and math, influencing her to one day pursue a degree as a family nurse practitioner.

“My cousin is actually a doctor and his fiancé is a nurse practitioner and I absolutely love it. COVID-19 did inspire some of it by seeing how much nurses and doctors are needed right now.”

Gilreath’s involvement in numerous school organizations has prepared her for a fast-paced work environment, but sometimes it’s nice to push academics aside.

“Softball is one of those outlets for me. I don’t have to focus on school when I’m in a game. I don’t have to focus on social life or anything. I’m just completely focused on the game. It’s just very peaceful and the energy that comes from the environment is amazing.”

Congratulations to Katie Gilreath, our WLTZ Scholar Athlete of the Week.
