Biker Speeding Over 100 mph Before Crash
Mustang Driver Still Listed In Critical Condition
A motorcycle driver died and another man continues fighting for his life after a high speed collision in Columbus Friday night. The incident occurred at the intersection of Veterans Parkway and the Manchester Expressway in front of horrified witnesses.
Colin Thomas Schmidt was allegedly seen racing down Veterans with other bikers. Dash cam video obtained exclusively by First News from a civilian witness shows the 27 year old Schmidt speeding well in excess of 100 miles an hour according to a source with first hand knowledge of the investigation.
“Oh my God. Oh my God.“
It also gives a glimpse of the gut wrenching reaction by those who witnessed the crash. The Ford Mustang the motorcycle hit was almost unrecognizable. The driver is still fighting for his life and listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Muscogee County Sheriff Donna Tompkins told First News her deputy observed the bikers “weaving in an out of traffic and speeding” but halted the pursuit shortly before the crash. Reached today by telephone the sheriff said there was an ongoing investigation and she had no further comment.
The data from the crash including the exact speed of the motorcycle and toxicology results could take weeks to process but based on evidence already made public the accident was preventable. The Columbus Police Department’s motor squad is the lead investigative agency handling the crash investigation.
