Study: Covid Linked To Chronic Gum Disease?
NEW RESEARCH FINDS POTENTIAL LINK BETWEEN COVID-19 AND CHRONIC GUM DISEASE
(CNN) – If you’re home a lot more because of the coronavirus pandemic, you may be tempted to skip brushing your teeth and flossing.
But staying on top of your oral health during these times is important.
New research published on Thursday found a potential link between chronic gum disease and COVID-19 complications.
Two California researchers note oral diseases, particularly periodontitis, increase the risk of respiratory illness.
They point to the “harmful inflammatory IL-6 protein” as a contributing factor.
When bacteria from the gums travels through the body and spreads the Il-6 protein, it can complicate how a COVID-19 patient responds to treatment.
You can read more about it in Thursday’s California Dental Association Journal.
