Spencer Greenwave Gear Up for New Region 2-AAAA

GREENWAVE FINISHED 2019 SEASON WITH A RECORD OF (3-7) FOR CLASS AA

The Spencer football team has been hard at work under second-year Head Coach Robert Sanders. Despite being a month behind due to COVID-19, the Greenwave are rolling right back into shape.

“Most of my starters came in relatively good condition,” said Spencer Head Coach Robert Sanders. “That’s due to the fact that they took ownership of the team, and they would put workouts on Zoom meetings and stuff like that.”

Spencer High’s biggest challenge will be moving up to Region 2-AAAA. Now they’ll face many of the area teams. Prior to the change, the Greenwave battled in Class AA.

“We are very excited because we know what we are fixing to bring to the table,” said Spencer junior quarterback Darquavious Stephens. “Lot of schools sleeping on us this year, so can show them what we’re working with.”

“In the region that we were in we had to play against teams like Callaway, Bremen and Heard County which were powerhouses in AA,” said Sanders. “I think that’s hardened us to the point that we can play on the AAAA level.”

The strength of the Greenwave offense is their wide receiver core. The squad is about 6-8 players deep, and Spencer’s own defense can vouch for their talent.

“They’re coming. We’ve got a good core,” said Spencer junior linebacker Johntavious Shingles. “Working with a good team. As long as the quarterback knows how to put it in the right spot then we have a chance.”

Spencer finished last season with a record of (3-7). After evaluating the year, Coach Sanders decided to make discipline his focus for his young team that has only seven to eight seniors.

“Just rebuilding. It’s better than last year,” said Spencer senior wide receiver, athlete and safety Tamaric Lawson. “Right now for the practices, the weight room and everything is more organized.”

“We have a bout 20 freshmen that joined the team this year,” said Sanders. “Several of those freshmen is probably going to play Friday night, so I’m looking forward to seeing them grow, develop and mesh with my older kids.”

The Greenwave kickoff the season against Dougherty on Friday, August 21 at Memorial Stadium.
