Ivanka’s Goya Post Re-Ups Hatch Act Debate
BY POSTING A PICTURE OF HERSELF WITH A CAN OF GOYA BLACK BEANS, IVANKA TRUMP MAY HAVE VIOLATED A GOVERNMENT ETHICS RULE
(CNN) – By tweeting a picture of herself holding a can of black beans; Ivanka Trump may have violated a government ethics rule.
Take a look, you can see her holding a can of Goya beans Vanna white-style with the caption, “If it’s Goya, it has to be good.”
The brand has been getting backlash since the CEO’s recent praise of president Trump.
So what does a Tweet have to do with an ethics violation?
Well, according to the United States Office of Government Ethics, “Executive branch employees may not use their government positions to suggest that the agency or any part of the executive branch endorses an organization– including a nonprofit organization– product, service, or person.”
But even if somebody files a complaint about this post, which would trigger an an investigation and possible disciplinary action; an ethics expert says it’s highly unlikely anything would come of it since any kind of investigation would ultimately involve the president.
