Shaw’s Team Chemistry is Strong Despite Short Summer Conditioning Schedule

SHAW RAIDERS FINISHED THE 2019 SEASON (6-4, 4-4)

A rainy day two of Muscogee County football summer conditioning is in the books. The Shaw Raiders looking to get back on track after gradually improving over the past three years.

“You can’t control the elements,” said Head Coach Al Pellegrino. “You can’t control the bugs. You can’t control a lot of things, but you can control what you do when you come out here.”

The COVID-19 pandemic delayed summer conditioning for fall sports in Muscogee County by nearly a month in comparison to other GHSA schools. Safety was the priority for athletes this year.

“Coach P talks a lot about adversity and how you have to fight through it,” said senior quarterback Wasan Davis. “I try to keep that in my mind everyday. No matter how tough times are, you can still work.”

Despite the delay, the Raiders’ team chemistry has helped speed up the process. Shaw is determined this season, after falling short of the playoffs in 2019 by one win.

“All of them played their freshman year, and they took their beating,” said Pellegrino. “We went (1-9). Each year we’ve improved. Last year we went (6-4), so they’ve seen it and they know what it takes to get to where they need to be.”

Besides training, safety is another step in preparing for the season. Temperature checks and health questions must be asked before every practice, but for these players it is worth it.

“I was happy. I was just waiting for the opportunity to come,” said senior athlete and running back Amir Harper. “I was waiting to meet my teammates again because I haven’t seen them. Everyone’s been in quarantine, so I just missed everyone.”

“We have to stay at least 6-feet apart, so you know it’s different but we’re still practicing,” said senior tight end and defensive end Will Clickner. “We’re still putting work in and we’re still grinding.”

This marks the last season for eight senior Raiders, so they want to make every practice count.

“As quick as they let us come out here is as quick as we can get this thing taken away from us,” said Pellegrino in a post-practice huddle. “Do things the right way and be safe.”

The Raiders kickoff the season Friday, August 28 on the road in Monroe at 7:30 p.m. EST. In Region 2-AAAA, Shaw will face Carver, Columbus, Hardaway, Jordan, Kendrick, LaGrange, Shaw, Spencer and Troup.
