45th Anny Arthur Ashe’s Historic Wimbledon Win

45 YEARS AGO ON JULY 5 ARTHUR ASHE BECOMES FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN TO WIN WIMBLEDON

(CNN) – Sunday marks 45 years since Arthur Ashe became the first African American man to win Wimbledon.

He took down heavily favored, top-seed player Jimmy Connors to claim the victory.

Off the court; Ashe was a civil rights activist.

He had heart problems that required multiple surgeries.

During one of them, he appears to have gotten a transfusion of blood with HIV.

He advocated for AIDS and HIV research, until complications from the virus took his life in 1993.
