Antarctic Ice Capable Of Melting Faster Than Thought

ANTARCTIC ICE SHEETS RETREATED AT SPEEDS OF UP TO 50 METERS (164 FEET) A DAY AT THE END OF THE LAST ICE AGE -- ABOUT TEN TIMES QUICKER THAN THE FASTEST RETREATING SHEETS OF TODAY

(CN) – New evidence shows Antarctic ice sheets are capable of melting faster than the current rate.

University of Cambridge researchers say they base that conclusion on wave-like ridges on the ocean floor.

They say those patterns show sheets melted ten times faster at the end of the last ice age than is happening today.

Their findings are out in the journal “Science” Thursday.

Researchers say the discovery suggests modern ice melt could speed up if climate change goes unchecked.
