The Alabama gymnastics duo of Luisa Blanco and Makarri Doggette have been named to the 2020 Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team the league office announced Tuesday.
“We’re extremely proud of Luisa and Makarri for all that they accomplished during their freshman seasons,” UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. “They came in and made an immediate and impressive impact for us, handling the pressure of SEC competition with true grace. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.”
Alabama and Missouri were the only schools to put more than one gymnast on the all-freshman squad this season. In addition to being named all-freshman, both gymnasts were also named SEC Specialist of the Week during their initial campaigns. Doggette, a native of Pickerington, Ohio, earned the honor following the Tide’s home meet vs. No. 1 Oklahoma, posting three scores of 9.9-or-better, including a 9.95 to win the uneven bars. Blanco, from Dallas, Texas, took home the honor after scoring matching 9.95s on the balance beam and floor exercise against Kentucky, winning both events.
Doggette closed the season ranked 14th nationally and fourth in the SEC in the uneven bars, while Blanco was 25th nationally and seventh in the conference in the balance beam.
Blanco and Doggette joined senior Shea Mahoney and junior Alonza Klopfer in earning year-end SEC honors. Mahoney was voted the SEC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s coaches, while Klopfer was named to the 2020 SEC Community Service Team following the conclusion of the regular season.
