Evidence Of Ancient Rainforests Found In Antarctica

(CNN) – Rainforests in Antarctica?

Researchers say that may have been the case tens of millions of years ago.

According to a study published on Wednesday in the journal Nature; there is evidence that Antarctica supported a swampy rainforest 90-million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

The planet was much warmer at that time, included at the south pole.

Researchers were able to pull a sample of sediment core near the Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers in 2017.

CT scans of that sediment revealed pristine samples of forest soil, pollen, spores, and even root systems so well preserved that they could identify cell structures.

Authors of the study say this evidence is surprising because it shows that even during months of darkness, rainforests were able to grow in Antarctica showing a warmer climate than expected.
