Great Barrier Reef Experiences Most Bleaching Ever
AUSTRALIAN GREAT BARRIER REEF EXPERIENCES ITS THIRD "BLEACHING EVENT" IN RECENT YEARS
(CNN) – Scientists say Australia’s Great Barrier reef has just taken another hit from climate change.
The reef has experienced what they call its most widespread “bleaching event” on record.
They say the phenomenon started last month and stretched into early March.
And it came on the heels of two other bleachings in recent years, that killed half of the corals on the reef .
Bleaching means that corals turn white because they lose some algae living in their tissues.
Scientists blame that on warmer ocean temperatures caused by climate change.
Corals can survive a bleaching event in some cases.
Researchers are now assessing the damage.
