Florida Keys Close To Tourists
THE FLORIDA KEYS ARE CLOSING SUNDAY DUE TO CORONAVIRUS, EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE NO CASES THERE
(CNN) – The Florida Keys are closing this weekend for the foreseeable future.
The Keys are linked by a single highway; U.S. One and will be closed to non-residents starting Sunday March 22nd.
The unprecedented move will be a major blow to the tourism industry.
But Florida Keys government officials say they must protect the health and safety of residents, many of whom are elderly.
The only exception is for long-term renters in vacation homes and RV parks with contracts of 28 days or more.
They are to be allowed to remain until the conclusion of their contracts.
Hotels have been directed to stop taking new reservations effective immediately.
This action comes despite the fact Monroe County health officials say there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus there.
