The Planet Is An Unlikely Beneficiary Of COVID
THERE'S AN UNLIKELY BENEFICIARY OF CORONAVIRUS: THE PLANET
(CNN) – Experts say there’s an unlikely beneficiary of coronavirus: The planet.
That’s because emissions are falling while people stay inside and businesses shut down.
In China’s Hubei province, the average number of “good quality air days” increased 21.5% in February, compared to the same period last year.
That’s according to China’s government.
A change is also visible in satellite images released by NASA and the European Space Agency.
They show a huge reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions in major Chinese cities between January and February.
Coal consumption is also down.
From February 3rd to March 1st, CO2 emissions were down by at least 25%.
That’s according to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air.
However, emissions could go higher than before when China’s economy gets moving again.
