FROM PHENIX CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION

Dear Parents,

During this time of uncertainty, Phenix City Schools hopes that you and your families remain healthy!  And we want to thank you for the questions, encouragement, and offers of prayers as we seek to provide the best possible support in our shared responsibility of educating your child.

Clearly, the threat of COVID-19 and unprecedented closure of schools have created barriers to regular instruction. As a result, it is understandable to experience a bit of uneasiness about a number of things, including childcare. To assist parents with keeping children engaged during the closure, Phenix City Schools is offering a variety of learning opportunities. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to continue their academic progress. These optional remote learning experiences will be provided as much as possible while we are physically prevented from attending school.

Learning experiences during the next few weeks may come in the form of printed take-home packets, lessons delivered virtually, or video conferences with teachers. How your child engages with these experiences will be determined and communicated to you by your child’s teacher(s). If your child has a take-home packet, please follow the provided directions. If your child’s teacher uses a form of online instruction, the following applications and platforms may be utilized:

Google Classroom – In many of our classes, this is a typical method of delivering instruction and materials to students. Using any Internet-connected devices, students login with their G Suite accounts and access this platform.

Screencastify – Screencastify is a platform that allows teachers to record their computer screens to deliver pre-recorded lessons. These videos can then be emailed, placed in Google Classroom, or distributed in a variety of other methods for student viewing.

Google Hangouts – Google Hangouts is a term that includes both live chatting and videoconferencing. In other words, teachers may answer questions from students or teach live lessons using Google Hangouts Meet video conferencing technology. Most Google Hangouts will be group conversations. Teachers will only communicate in 1:1 online conversations with students if a parent or guardian is included.
