WhatsApp Hits Two Billion Users

(CNN) – The popularity of WhatsApp reaches new heights.

The mobile messaging app now has more than two billion users.

It made its debut in 2009 and was acquired by Facebook in 2014 in a $19-billion deal.

For those unfamiliar with the product, it allows people to message each other anywhere around the world.

WhatsApp also has end-to-end encryption technology, which enables all chats to be secured.

According to WhatsApp’s blog posts, not even WhatsApp can read messages or hear calls made by its users.

Governments have become critics of the technology.

Some want regulations to enable access to the protected data.
