Columbus Man Critical After Interrupting Basketball Game

Danny Jones Severely Beaten, Suffered Fractured Neck During Attack

A Columbus man is in critical condition one day after he was severely beaten at his family’s North Columbus home and now police have a man in custody charged in connection to the case. The incident happened on Wimbish Court off Charter Oaks Circle.

Witnesses tell WLTZ it started with a game but quickly escalated into a criminal matter.

62 year old Danny Jones was traveling down Charter Oaks Circle when he encountered a group of young people in the street playing basketball.  It’s a familiar scene according to neighbors we spoke to who say the group usually clears a path for oncoming traffic but Thursday afternoon words were exchanged before Danny Jones made his way through the players and around the corner to his family property.

Minutes later at the home on Wimbish Court, the confrontation escalated to a full on brawl and physical assault when one of the men followed Jones. His family says the altercation left him with a fractured neck and multiple stitches to repair head and facial wounds.  The victim’s 60 year old brother was also at home and injured during the fight.

Late this afternoon, Darnel Piett was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, Battery and Criminal Trespass. First News has also learned police are searching for a second person of interest wanted in connection to this case.  This is a developing story.
