Scholar Athlete of the Week: Jakayla Dickerson

Northside Junior Forward Jakayla Dickerson is known by her teammates as a leader and a competitor. She’s also that in the classroom, so her 3.9 GPA that’s of a tenth point short of a perfect 4.0 motivates her.

“I’m so close and I just want to be even better,” said Dickerson.

What Jakayla thinks leads to her good grades, is her focus throughout the day.

“I stay engaged in class so I know everything that’s going on,” says Dickerson. If I have question about something, I can just ask about it and it helps me learn quicker.”

Jakayla’s years of playing basketball has only helped her in the classroom.

“I am a junior on the team so it helps me lead. In class, we do group assignments so it helps me work with others more efficiently.”

After school, Jakayla would like to go into the medical field for one simple reason.

“I like to help people. What better way to help people than when they’re ill, at their worst time?”

Before she can practice medicine, Jakayla knows there are many years of school to come, but she’s ready for that challenge.

“It’s something that I want and I have a very determined mindset. If I want something, I’m going to do my best to achieve it.

Around this time next year Jakayla will be deciding where she will go to college. Her front runner right now is Auburn University, even if it comes with a bit of a contradiction.

“It would be Auburn, I’m a Georgia fan so I might get in trouble for saying that. We went to a tour on campus freshman year and i fell in love with it then.”

Congratulations Jakayla Dickerson WLTZ’s Scholar Athlete of the Week.
