300+ Migrant Children Crossed Border Alone
HHS SAYS 352 CHILDREN HAVE SEPARATED FROM THEIR FAMILIES IN MEXICO AND CROSSED INTO THE U.S. ALONE
(CNN) – More than 350 migrant children, who were previously waiting in Mexico with family as part of a Trump administration policy have crossed the border alone.
They made the journey into the U.S. between October 1st of last year and January 13th.
It’s part of an ongoing trend of children; many of whom are from Central America separating from their families after living in unsafe conditions.
The ‘Return to Mexico’ policy requires migrant families to return to Mexico and wait for a court date in the U.S.
unaccompanied children are exempt from that policy.
Those who cross the border are detained by the Department of Homeland Security and referred to Health and Human Services.
Case managers then work to place the child with a relative or other sponsor in the U.S.
The U.S. has returned more than 57,000 migrants to Mexico nearly a year after the policy was implemented.
The Department of Homeland Security is not commenting on the situation.
A federal appeals court is allowing the policy to continue for the time being.
