Cougars, Lady Cougars Highly Ranked in ITA Preseason Poll


The Columbus State University tennis teams will both begin the season inside the top-three of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings as the organization released its preseason national poll.

After a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II national championship match, the men’s team earned a second-place ranking in the first poll of 2020. On the women’s side, CSU sits in the third spot.

Barry, who defeated the Cougars 4-3 in the 2019 national championship, is the preseason number one team in both the men’s and women’s poll. West Florida, Wingate, and Saint Leo are behind both Barry and CSU in the men’s top-five while Barry, Lynn, CSU, Indianapolis, and Nova Southeastern make up the women’s top-five.

The Cougars have now been ranked inside the top-five in 18 consecutive polls dating back to March 28, 2018. On its current schedule, CSU will take on 10 ranked foes with three additional matches at the ITA National Indoor Championships against to be determined opponents.

It has been five straight polls now for the Lady Cougars in the top-five as CSU begins 2020 where it ended 2019. Columbus State reached the NCAA national semifinals last season for the second time in program history. In the current rankings, the women will take on three top-10 opponents, including second-ranked Lynn. The Lady Cougars will also play in the ITA National Indoor Championships in late February and early March.

During the fall, numerous individuals earned national rankings. Alvaro Regalado is second in singles as well as second with his doubles partner Matei Avram. Three Lady Cougars are ranked in the top-25 in singles play with  Luise Sachs (10th), Beatriz Lopez (17th), and Candice Paya (21st). Kristina Baran and Lopez are ranked 10th in doubles.

CSU is the three-time defending men’s and women’s PBC champions.
