Scholar Athlete of the Week: Russell County’s Colton Danielson
DANIELSON IS RANKED THIRD IN THE ALABAMA CLASS 6A, 220 POUND WEIGHT GROUP AS OF JANUARY 2, 2020
In Alabama Class 6A wrestling, senior Colton Danielson from Russell County has a chance to win state. The senior competes in the the 220 pound weight group.
“It’s my last shot, I have to go all out and win,” said Danielson. “I can do something I’ve never done before or nobody around here as ever seen before. That’s what I hope to do.”
Hard work has payed off for Danielson who ranks third in his weight class in Alabama, and he currently holds a season record of (46-6) going into the new year.
“First period is won by the best technique, second period is more stamina and third period is more heart. It’s just about who wants it more.”
The senior also plays football for the Warriors, but he has found his passion in wrestling. He began his wrestling career as a sophomore.
“From last year to this year I gained 30 pounds, and just got a lot heavier and stronger.”
The wrestler stays busy as the senior class president, a member of the Beta Club and JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) program, all while maintaining a 3.7 GPA.
“School, sports, sleep and that’s it, repeat.”
Danielson is thankful for the opportunities at Russell County High School. He plans on studying physical education in college to become a coach.
“I take so much from my coaches and I want to help somebody, because they really helped me a lot. Hope to help someone younger than me.”
Right now his goals are to win a state title and make his school proud.
“I have to set the example for the younger kids, because if I don’t do it then they’re definitely not going to do it, so I have to always come in and do what I’m supposed to do more so they can be good one day.”
A good role model to follow. Congratulations to Colton Danielson, our WLTZ Scholar Athlete of the Week.
