Scholar Athlete of the Week: Spencer’s Jaylin Sellers

The Spencer Greenwave are back on the court and off to a hot (5-2) start before region play. Their two losses to the Central Red Devils in overtime and the Heritage Patriots.

“We’ve been trying to reach a goal ever since ninth grade,” said Spencer junior guard Jaylin Sellers. “We just have to keep going, communicate and get our chemistry right.”

Sellers’ goal this season is to win another region title, the Greenwave won the region in 2017, and earn his first state championship under Spencer Assistant Coach Eric Allen.

“He treats me like a son. He be hard on me everyday,” said Sellers. “Twice as hard then anyone else, so he be hard on me everyday and help me keep going.”

“Make sure you’re staying on top of those grades too now,” said Allen.

Without good grades the boys can’t play basketball, so academics is a priority for Sellers. He has a 3.6 GPA and looks to play college basketball like his older brother.

“I want to study engineering because math is my favorite subject,” said Sellers. “I want to build my mom a house one day and have my own business.”

The 6’3″, 175-pound lefty guard began his basketball journey at 4-years-old, and he is very thankful for his family, especially his mom April Brown.

“She means so much to me because she sacrificed a lot for me and we’ve been through a lot,” said Sellers. “Every time she is in the crowd I try to give her my best game.”

Sellers strives to make his family proud on and off the court. He is a member of the National Honor Society and a student Ambassador at Spencer High School.

“It’s getting me ready for the real world,” said Sellers. “You know, if I do make it big, that’s the plan, I know I’m going to give back to my community.”

Congratulations to Jaylin Sellers, our WLTZ Scholar Athlete of the Week.
