Opelika’s Veterans Day Ceremony

Monday, Opelika celebrated Veterans Day, past present and future.

Guest speakers were Army Colonel Richard Pelham and USMC Colonel Chris Richie.

They spoke on “Veterans: Why We Serve –Past, Present and Future.”

The event also showcased the Opelika High School Choir.

Mayor Gary Fuller unveiled a special spot downtown for Purple Heart recipients.

Medal of Honor recipient Bennie Adkins also attended.

Marlena Mumma’s Dad also attended to unveil an old headstone that was forgotten about at an old mortuary.

With help from city members, Edna Ward, a volunteer from the Lee County Cemetery Preservation Commission, they tracked down PFC. Charlie Giddens story, the time he served and also unveiled that his final resting place would be in front of city hall.
