Scholar Athlete of the Week: Glenwoods’ Will Haines
HAINES HOLDS A 4.35 GPA, PLAYS FOOTBALL AND BUILDS ROBOTS
Rain or shine the Gators train hard at The Swamp, but to have success on the field Glenwood Head Coach Jason Gibson wants his athletes to maintain good grades in the classroom.
“He knows what he’s doing,” said junior quarterback Will Haines. “He pushes us, and he makes sure we have our priorities straight, while also pushing us on the football field.”
Haines plays football and tennis, while also sitting in the top ten of his class with a 4.35 GPA.
“A lot of people are going to tell you, you can’t do both, but you can. If you’re willing to give up friends time and video games, I had to give that up right out of middle school.”
Outside of sports, Haines participates in National Honor Society, Beta Club, the Math Team and Robotics.
“Building a machine to do a task. That’s just awesome to create something from scratch like that. Like you’re giving it life almost.”
He found is passion for science in sixth grade at his school in Columbus.
“One of the first things in that class was aerospace engineering, about the space shuttles. How they are created and the air foils.”
Haines plans on studying Aerospace Engineering at Auburn University or Georgia Tech. He’s always been a Tiger fan, and Georgia Tech has a great Engineering program.
“You can’t see to space. That’s something you’ll have to find out through rockets. I want to go to Mars. That’s something that’s never been done before. I want to do something that’s never been done before.”
Congratulations Will Haines, WLTZ’s Scholar Athlete of the Week.
