Glenwood and Chambers Academy Volleyball Squads Finish Second in the State

GATORS AND REBELS ON THE HUNT FOR FIRST AISA STATE VOLLEYBALL TITLE

The Glenwood Gators and Chambers Academy Rebels were on the hunt for their school’s first AISA Volleyball State Championship. Both teams advanced to the final game and fell short of the title.

The Gators made it back to the championship for the first time since 2017. The Class AA Final Four game against Macon East was a battle. Glenwood lost the first two sets, and battled back taking the match to five. Isabel Krick hit the game winning kill.

Then Glenwood faced Edgewood in the Class AA State Championship. The Gators had faced the Wildcats three times already this season, losing every game 3-0.

“All season we couldn’t do it,” said sophomore Josie Miller. “Every time we played them, they wiped the floor with us.”

This time Glenwood had the edge early, winning the first two sets. Edgewood battled back and won the fifth set for the title.

“Just to go five sets and then turnaround, and take two, and it’s just crazy,” said Glenwood Head Coach Kayla Strength. “It speaks volumes of them as people.”

Now to Chambers Academy. First-year Rebels Head Coach Randy Bonds was happy to coach the team. This season the school was short a coach, and Bonds stepped up for the job. He led the young squad to the AISA Class A State Championship for the first time in Chambers Academy history

In the Class A Final Four game, the Rebels swept Cornerstone in three sets. Chambers Academy was ready to take on Southern. Just check out their chant at the end of this Twitter video.

Chambers Academy put up a good fight. Sophomore all-around athlete Bailey Allen led the team with 18 kills, but Southern took home the title (25-8, 25-20, 25-17). The Rebels finished their season with the school’s best volleyball record, only losing two games.

“We definitely gave it our all. We did all we could do,” said Allen. “Southern definitely deserved to win. They were a good team. We got it next year. We’ll come back.”
