Man Charged With Felony Animal Cruelty

Edward Bailey Allegedly Taped Dog's Mouth Shut, Broke Leg

A man charged with animal cruelty made his first court appearance this afternoon.

Edward Bailey appeared in Recorder’s Court where a Columbus Police Officer testified the man said he bit “Annie” because the dog bit him. Bailey said he may have also twisted the dog’s leg.

But the officer noticed the dog’s injuries were far more extensive.

Annie was suffering from a compound fracture to her back leg and facial injuries from where Bailey allegedly taped the dog’s mouth shut for several days. The officer noted blood spatters throughout the home were from the dog not the human.

Annie has since landed at the Animal Ark with Miranda Morrison. Strangers who’ve heard about the case have made donations for surgery in hopes of a full recovery. “The community very quickly responded to Annie and a lot of that um she was so young you know. She is only 10 months old. She’s still a puppy and just the fact I think that this happened at the hands of a human somebody did this to her,” Morrison told First News after the hearing.

Initially Bailey was charged with a misdemeanor but after disturbing testimony, the prosecutor asked the Judge to increase the charge to aggravated , felony animal cruelty which he did.

“I’m really proud of our community for stepping up and voicing their concern with that and I’m really happy with everyone involved, the officer, the Judge for agreeing that people need to be held accountable for this kind of abuse , that Columbus will not tolerate this . Noone should tolerate this,” Morrison said.

The Judge set Bailey’s bond at $15,000 and bound the case over to Superior Court.
