The Columbus State University men’s tennis team will have a chance to capture another Division II ITA Cup national championship on Sunday as junior Alvaro Regalado will play in the singles title match. The ITA Cup is being held at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.
Regalado will have a chance to become just the second player in Columbus State history to win the ITA Cup Division II national championship after advancing to the finals. Former Cougar great KP Pannu won the singles title at the event in 2017 and 2018.
Following a 6-0, 6-3 victory to earn a spot in the semifinals, the junior matched up against third-seed Anish Sriniketh of St. Edward’s University on Saturday. Regalado took a tightly contested first set 7-5 before capping off the victory with a 6-3 second set score to move into Sunday’s championship.
In the title match, top-seeded Regalado will face second-seeded Alejandro Ibanez Gallego of Barry. CSU and Barry have met in the previous two NCAA National Championships.
Regalado and his doubles partner Matei Avram nearly made Columbus State history on Saturday falling just shy of a doubles championship. After earning their way to the title match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on Friday, Regalado and Avramhad a showdown with second-seeded Dario Huber and Renato Lima of Indianapolis.
Regalado and Avram held an early lead, but the Indianapolis pair stormed back to take the match 7-6, 6-4.
The Lady Cougars earn victories in the consolation brackets on Friday. In singles play, Luise Sachs grabbed two wins to finish the ITA Cup on a high note. She first took down Maja Makal of Queens 7-5, 6-4 before coming back a set down to defeat Ashley Penshorn of St. Mary’s 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The doubles pair of Kristina Baran and Beatriz Lopez also went 2-0 on Friday. In their first match, the Lady Cougar duo won 6-4, 6-2 against Nina Furmaniak and Molly Helgesson of Saint Leo 6-4, 6-2. Baran and Lopez were back at it later in the day to earn a hard fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over Nicole Kielan and Barbara Quagliardi of Adelphi.
The ITA Cup is the only singles and doubles national championship event for the Division II level. Each divisional champion will qualify for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif.
