Columbus Murder Victim Safer Inside Muscogee County Jail
Montrell Johnson and Deontae Joseph Killed In Drive By Shooting
A Columbus Murder victim was safer inside the Muscogee County Jail than out on bond after a deadly double shooting off Cusseta Road Monday.
According to Columbus Police Detectives, 17 year old Deontae Joseph and 18 year old Montrell Johnson were strolling down 32nd Avenue late Monday night when when a vehicle described as an “older model police car” pulled up and opened fire on the two teens.
Both victims were dead on the scene from multiple gunshot wounds when First Responders arrived on the scene just before midnight. The suspect vehicle bolted away from the scene toward North Lumpkin Road and that was all police had to go on after the double shooting. Investigators are still looking for a suspect.
Muscogee County Court records reveal Johnson would have been safer staying inside the Muscogee County Jail than roaming the mean streets of South Columbus. The 18 year old was just released nine days ago from the jail on his own recognizance for a Burglary charge.
The teen’s deaths mark the 29th and 30th homicides the Muscogee County Coroner’s Office has responded to in 2019. The Murder count is on track to meet or exceed previous years.
