Scholar Athlete of the Week: Auburn High’s Samantha Rogers

Auburn High School took home the girls cross country state championship in 2017 and 2018.

“When you think about the team and what you’re working for, not just working for yourself, it really pushes you in the race,” said senior Samantha Rogers.

The senior ranks second in the state of Alabama in the 5K with a time of 17:59.10, and she holds the Auburn High School record. She sits behind Homewood High School senior Lainey Phelps who has a time of 17:36.18.

“It’s just fun to see your work pay off, and so I’m excited for what’s to come.”

Rogers holds a 3.7 GPA and is the defending state champion in the one and two mile run. The senior’s hard work on and off the track have earned her the opportunity to join the Auburn University cross country and track team’s next season.

“I feel like their coach is really encouraging and he is always on them to work hard, so I like that about him.”

She’ll be following in her brothers, Evan and Jack’s, footsteps.

“A place I really love and once they went there it kind of just made me more excited. They’re very hard working, so I look up to them a lot”

Taking anatomy as a junior and her love for helping people influenced her plan to study nursing at Auburn University. Rogers has this advice for those who look to run their way to college.

“Have your priorities and stay motivated, and find something that keeps you on track.”

After cross country season, Rogers will start training for track and field. She is the defending state champion in the 1600 meters (4:57.90) and 3200 meters (10:37.67), which broke the state record Rogers set in 2017.

Congratulations Samantha Rogers, WLTZ’s scholar athlete of the week.
