Lady Cougars Tabbed Preseason Favorites


The fourth-ranked Columbus State University women’s soccer team was selected to win its seventh straight Peach Belt Conference regular season championship as the league released its annual preseason coaches poll Wednesday.

It is the fifth straight season that the Lady Cougars have been tabbed as the preseason favorites.

CSU received eight of the possible 11 first-place votes to receive 108 points. Flagler (97), who grabbed two first-place tallies, North Georgia (91), UNC Pembroke (79), and Lander (74) completed the top-five. UNCP joined CSU and FC in receiving a first-place vote. Coaches were not permitted to rank their own team.

Columbus State returns nine starters from last season’s squad the went 18-1-2, including preseason All-PBC players Riley Clark, Madeline Goodfellow, and Kimmy May.

In 2018, the Lady Cougars went through PBC play with an unblemished mark for just the fourth time in program history finishing the conference slate with a 10-0-0 record.

Columbus State will enter the 2019 season with a winning percentage over .860 in PBC matches dating back to 2004.

The Lady Cougars will begin the season on Thursday, Sept. 5 against Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Fla. The match will kick off at 6:30 p.m.
