Bulldogs Poised for Season Opener at Purdue

The University of Georgia soccer team kicks off the 2019 season at Purdue on Thursday, August 22 at 7 p.m.

“It’s an exciting time,” head coach Billy Lesesne said. “We want to build off some of the momentum we had playing against Duke in the preseason game. I thought there were areas that we executed well and others that we needed to work on, so we’ve addressed those. Purdue is a team that beat us 1-0 at home last year so it’s going to be a competitive game. We’re excited about getting the opportunity to play a game that has a lot of meaning. We’re excited about getting on the road and seeing how we do when we’re not playing in front of our home fans. It’s a good starting game for us that has captured our team’s attention.”

Historically, Georgia is 14-5-5 all-time in season openers. The Bulldogs fell to Georgetown, 1-0, in the season opener last season at the Virginia Tech Tournament in Blacksburg.  Overall, the Bulldogs are winners of seven of their last 14 season openers dating back to 2005, and have outscored opponents 23-3 in those games.

Earlier this week juniors Reagan Glisson and Katie Higgins, sophomores Cecily Stoute and Emory Wegener, along with freshman Haley Sorrell were named to the SEC Preseason Watch List.

Georgia returns all 11 starters to the lineup for 2019, including all stat leaders from the 2018 season.

The Bulldogs faced the Boilermakers for the first time in 2018, falling 1-0 in a close contest.

The home opener for the Bulldogs is set for Sunday, August 25 against Binghamton at 1 p.m.
