Auburn trio shines at 2019 Southeastern Championships

In the last-chance qualifier before U.S. Nationals, the Auburn trio of Abi Wilder, Christian Ginieczki, and Thomas Heinzel all made new Olympic trial qualifying standards at the 2019 Southeasterns in Huntsville, Alabama this past weekend.

Wilder and Ginieczki, who will be juniors in the fall, both qualified in the 100m backstroke. Wilder swam a 1:02.45 on the women’s side, and Ginieczki finished with a time of 56.36 on the men’s side.

Heinzel, also a junior-to-be, qualified with a 23.18 in the 50m freestyle.

This coming week, rising senior Julie Meynen will swim the 50m and 100m freestyle for Luxembourg at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

Meynen, a 2016 Olympian, is the seventh-fastest performer in Auburn history in the 50m freestyle (22.05) and the fourth-fastest in the 100m freestyle (47.61). Her fastest 50m freestyle time came at this past year’s SEC championships. She set the Luxembourg national records in both events earlier this summer.

Last week, senior-to-be Alison Maillard dove at the FINA World Championships in South Korea where she finished 45th overall on the 3-meter. Maillard placed third nationally on the 3-meter at the 2019 NCAA Zone B Championships in March.
