Sophomore outfielder Steven Williams has been named the Perfect Game/Rawlings National Player of the Week coming off his performance in the Atlanta Regional last weekend.
It marks the first time in Williams’ career he has earned the recognition.
Williams went 6-for-13 (.462) in three games at Georgia Tech’s Russ Chandler Stadium. He scored three runs and hit two home runs, a double and drove in 10 en route to being named the Atlanta Regional Most Valuable Player.
The Albany, Georgia, native opened the tournament by going 4-for-5 with a home run and matched Auburn’s regional record with five RBI against Coastal Carolina. The following day, Williams hit a three-run, walk-off home run with two outs and two strikes against Georgia Tech, marking the team’s first walk-off homer in the NCAA Tournament since David Ross’ iconic home run at Florida State in 1997. Twenty-four hours later, Williams hit a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth inning against the Yellow Jackets, which proved to be the difference in the Tigers regional championship win.
Williams and the Tigers will take on North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional this weekend. It marks the team’s second straight super regional, which will get underway Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2.
